“Riptide” is a song by Vance Joy, an Australian singer and songwriter. It was released primarily as a track on his first EP, released in 2013, “God Loves You When You’re Dancing”, and was the second single from the EP. It is also present on his debut studio album from 2014, “Dream Your Life Away”. Vance Joy wrote the song, and also produced it with the help from drummer Edwin White. The song’s lyrics have been described as a “coming of age love story”.
The song was praised by most music critics, who compared it to singer-songwriters Paul Kelly and Jeff Buckley. “Riptide” was a huge commercial success in Australia, where it peaked at number six on the ARIA singles chart, and was later the number one song in radio station Triple J’s Hottest 100 of 2013. In 2014, “Riptide” reached a position No. 10 in the United Kingdom and managed to enter Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart, where it peaked at the top position.
