I know how to tune through the 5th fret (and 4th at the 3rd string), but I'm always unsure if two strings are at the same pitch. Whenever I'm using the piano as reference, the 6th string never sounds like the piano's low E. Or is my hearing's really just that sensitive? I've tried the hum-along technique but strings never seem to match in pitch no matter what I do. A tuner's out of the option until I'm old enough for a job to buy my own. So any tips with how two strings at the same pitch should sound like?

Try feeling the vibrations instead of hearing the sound. Close your eyes and feel the note you play on the piano and hold it with the pedal as you pluck the string with a pick. Tighten or loosen the string as you feel it. You will soon be able to do the same as you tune the guitar. Get the 1st or 6th string in tune and you can feel the rest. You can work up or down the frets on the string you have in tune to judge how the one you are tuning sounds. If you go up the fret board and it sounds close tighten the string. If you go down the fret board and it sounds close loosen the string.( that's going from 6th string to 1st ) Keep at it and you'll soon get it. Good luck.
