| I have taught myself how to play guitar over about a year and a half. If you have any questions about how to get started, post away and i'll try to lend a hand. | ||

| Right on! The more that you practice that the smoother you'll get switching between the chords. I'd start with the C chord and then the G7th chord. Pluck the bass string once on each chord and follow through with the strum. Put them together and you'll be able to play "Buffalo Gals". Your ear will tell you when to switch chords. I know it's old goofy song, but you have to start somewhere. Learn the other basic chords and you'll be able to play a lot of songs. Take you time, this is supposed to be fun. Start practicing your F chord once in a while now, it is the hardest one for a beginner. Don't let it get you down, you will figure it out. It has a barre' on the high e string and on the b string (one finger pressing down on 2 strings at the same time), that's why it is so difficult for beginners to master. Tally ho. | ||

To me, the easyest chords to learn and go between are Cadd9 and Full G. Stick a normal D chord in there and you can play Can't You See by Marshal Tucker, Sweet Home Alabama by Lynard Skynard, Knockin On Heavens Door by Guns n Roses, and a bunch of others. Most all rock n roll centers around G, C, and D. The more you play those the better you will be able to play around with other chords

| RVMartinez - the difference in what type of guitar you want comes from what type of music you want to play. The nylon strings are for fingerpicking (playing with all 10 fingers)and are usually for classical guitar (such as Andre Segovia) Steel string guitars are more for playing with a pick and for flatpicking (bluegrass) strumming cords (like folk music or pop stuff) or a combination of the two. You just need to pick your music style. Usually steel strings are more for singing with, and the nylon are for solo work. | ||

Gitafiddle
Thanks for your valuable advice. I, too, just bought a guitar (last night, as a matter of fact!), and I am really looking forward to playing my Strat......... Kindest regards, Stephen |

Tidobear,
What you mean are tabs. You should play the string open, then on the fifth fret, then on the seventh, then on the ait, etc... |

Hey there guys, if you are serious about learning the guitar there are heaps and heaps of free online lessons to be had, however, only a tutor or teacher can tell you what you are doing wrong and what to do to improve it. I suggest
you get one at some stage, whether it be for a day, a week, or a year, it's up to you. Good luck |
