How does the capo work?  As you move it along the frets, do the pitch go higher or do the chords change as well?

The capo allows a guitar player to play in a different key without having to know chords that can be difficult to play. As you slide the capo to 2nd, 3rd, 4th frets the pitch gets higher, because the key is changing.

The capo allows you to play in multiple keys even if you
only know the chords in one key. For example: let's say you only know the four chords - G - Em - C & D.
If you put the capo on the first fret and play these chords relative to it, these chords are now G# - Fm - C# - Eb.
Move the capo to the 2nd fret and the chords are now
A - F#m - D - E, and you'd be playing in the key of A.
And so on, up the neck. Pretty slick. Look at all the chords you just learned.
